Money patterns: How you got them
A recent Cambridge University study shows our money beliefs are created by the time we’re 7 years old. According to the study, here’s how our money beliefs formed:
- Sometime between 0 and 7-years old, you observed a money-related incident on TV or from people around you.
- Then you interpreted that incident based on your age, personality, and life experiences up to that point.
- From this interpretation, you created a money belief.
Most of us carry several money beliefs, which form our money attitude.
Why we can’t see how our money beliefs hold us back
It’s easy for us to move through our entire lives completely unaware that limiting money beliefs are biasing our decisions and sabotaging our wealth. That’s because our adult brains seek truth and logic, but many money beliefs aren’t based on either.
We create our money beliefs at such a young age, we didn’t have enough knowledge to discern between truth or logic at the time.
For instance, if a child heard her parents arguing about money, she may associate money with pain and fear. Then as an adult, she avoids managing her money, letting bills go past due or accounts become overdrawn. She doesn’t know why she avoids dealing with money, but subconsciously it’s because money triggers feelings of fear and pain.
Subconscious beliefs like these explain why confident people suddenly clam up and physically shrink around the subject of money. Or how calm people suddenly become violent or angry during money discussions.
You can argue your current struggles exist because, “I lost my job” or “the economy tanked”. But the truth is, there are still a lot of people making more money than ever before, even in this economy.
So why are some people thriving while others continue struggling?
It’s not the outside world happening to us. It’s how we respond. And your individualized response comes from your beliefs.
By taking control of your money beliefs and breaking free of your money blocks, you regain control of your wealth, and your life.
